Phil Theodorou received his earliest training in music as a boy chorister in his hometown of Pasadena, California, and he earned a bachelor's degree in vocal performance from Fresno State University in 1986. After completing a master’s degree in conducting and music education in 1988 at the prestigious Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, Theodorou taught in the California public schools for several years while studying at the University of Oklahoma for the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in choral conducting. Since that time, he has studied choral and orchestral conducting with Donald Neuen, Dennis Shrock, Helmut Rilling, and Larry Livingston. In 1992, he accepted an appointment as Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities at Georgia Southwestern University before returning to California in 1999 to teach choral music, Advanced Placement Music Theory, and International Baccalaureate studies in the Capistrano Unified School District. Following a decade of conducting and teaching music throughout Orange County, Theodorou attended the Boise State University College of Education to earn a Master of Education degree in educational leadership while directing choirs in the BSU Department of Music. He is a currently a candidate for the doctoral degree in educational curriculum and instruction at Boise State, and has been teaching and supervising music instruction in the Redondo Beach Unified School District since 2010.
In 1987, Theodorou won first prize at the Scarritt National Choral Conducting Competition in Nashville, Tennessee. For his classroom activities, Theodorou received a 1991 "Golden Apple Award" for outstanding teaching with the Lompoc Unified School District, the 2005 “Secondary Vocal Music Teacher of the Year Award” from Arts OC in Orange County, California, and the City of San Clemente recognized his civic contributions to its arts community in 2008. His ensembles consistently receive superior ratings at music festivals across the country, he has presented numerous performances at music educator conventions and conferences, and he has led several acclaimed choir tours throughout the United States and Europe. An ardent proponent of secondary school music, Theodorou specializes in both early music interpretation for young singers, school music curriculum development and alignment, and the study of music teacher evaluation procedures. He also writes and arranges his own music; his compositions have been performed at regional festivals throughout America.
In the summer of 2012, Phil will appear as the main character in the pilot of the USA Network series The Moment, produced by the Hochberg-Ebersol Company (THE Company). He resides in California with wife Megan Starr-Levitt, a former “Christine” with the national tour of “The Phantom of the Opera” and sons Alexander and Stefan.
